Cal Water Awarded $1.3 Million to Promote Conservation and Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/24/15 -- Today, California Water Service (Cal Water), the largest subsidiary of California Water Service Group (NYSE: CWT), announced it has received nearly $1.3 million from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) Water-Energy Grant Program to expand water-efficiency programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water and energy use.
The grants will augment Cal Water's Bathroom Fixture Replacement Program in three districts; $490,500 was awarded to the company's Bakersfield District, while $797,400 will fund the program in the company's Dominguez and East Los Angeles districts.
As part of the Bathroom Fixture Replacement Program, Cal Water's contractor will provide customers with installation of high‐efficiency toilets, bathroom faucet aerators, and high‐efficiency showerheads; recycle the replaced devices as practicable; and offer follow‐up customer service for a minimum of one year after the installation date. These services will be provided to qualified customers at no cost.
According to Interim Director of Drought and Conservation Ken Jenkins, the programs are consistent with Cal Water's customer-first approach to the drought, and will save a total of 52 million gallons of water annually; 1,764,000 kilowatt-hours per year; and 363,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
"By replacing qualified toilets with high‐efficiency toilets and retrofitting less efficient showerheads and bathroom faucet aerators, these programs will achieve both significant energy and water savings and provide great benefit to disadvantaged communities," Jenkins said. "These grants will enable us to continue providing quality, service, and value to our customers during this historic drought."
Cal Water serves about 2 million people through 487,000 service connections in California. The company has provided water service in the state since 1926. Additional information may be obtained online at www.calwater.com.
